St. Patrick’s Day Green Sensory Bin for Kids

play ideas for kids
After all of the St. Patrick’s Day crafts and activities that we’ve been creating so far, I had to incorporate a sensory bin. Most of the materials can be found at the Dollar Tree, Target or any craft store. Sensory play is great for toddlers and preschoolers with appropriate supervision. If you have toddlers, make sure to watch them closely as they might still put things into their mouths. Hope you enjoy this simple St. Patrick’s Day green sensory bin!

Supplies:

  • Plastic Gold Coins
  • Plastic Mini Cauldron
  • Shamrocks
  • Rainbows
  • Leprechaun Hats
  • Mustache
  • Tweezers
  • Green Colored Rice (regular long grain rice with green food dye)
  • Plastic Bin (medium or large)
  • Optional objects: gems, small scoops, beads, pom poms

HOW TO SET UP ST. PATRICK’S DAY SENSORY BIN

Fill your plastic bin with green dyed rice. I just added a few drops of green food coloring to a gallon size resealable bag with long grain rice. Shake up the bag and you’re good to go. You only need enough rice to cover the bottom of the bin.
Scatter the shamrocks, gold coins, cauldron and other supplies into the plastic bin. If you can’t find any cauldrons or gold coins around St. Patrick’s Day, check your local party store. They normally keep those items stocked year round. This green sensory bin is now ready for your child to enjoy.

Sensory bins give young kids the opportunity to play with different textures and work on their fine motor skills.  Let your child enjoy free play by using their imagination to explore the sensory bin. My 4-year old scooped up the rice with the cauldron then dumped it back in the bin. He also used the tweezers to pick up the coins and shamrocks. Want to incorporate math? Have the kids count how many coins can fit into the cauldron.  There’s so many ways kids can enjoy this activity.
