Really Easy Candy Cane Water Play Sensory Activity

We’re in full holiday mode at the house so I created this easy candy cane water play sensory bin. This fun activity was a hit with my boys. Your kids will love it too! I placed a plastic tablecloth under the table but they managed to get water everywhere. They were learning and having a great time so it was worth the mess. This is a festive activity for toddlers, preschoolers and older kids. However, small children should always be closely supervised. Some of the items may be a choking hazard.

This easy candy cane water play sensory activity was fun to put together for my boys. They enjoyed splashing the water and using the candy canes to pick up the mini trees. My kindergartner also practiced reciting his letters and spelling different words with the wooden alphabet tiles. I helped my toddler count the mini peppermint as he scooped them with the ladle. They also separated the candy canes by their color using the tongs. This is a fun learning activity that your kids will love.

How to Set Up Your Candy Cane Water Play Bin

Supplies:

IKEA FLISAT Children’s Table or plastic bin
Plastic candy canes
Mini bottle brush Christmas trees
Peppermint extract (optional)
Children kitchen utensils
Jumbo tweezers
Swirl peppermint candy erasers
Measuring cups
Wooden alphabet tiles

Start by filling your sensory table or plastic bin with water but only half full. You can add drops of peppermint extract to the water but this step is optional. Next, add the plastic candy canes, mini bottle brush trees and peppermint candy erasers. Let your little ones use their imagination while playing with the candy canes and other items. Make sure to supervise small children because some items are choking hazards. You can also use Christmas items that are larger to make this sensory activity safer for toddlers and preschoolers. Kids can use the measuring cups to scoop and pour the water. Allow your older kids to use the wooden alphabet tiles to create different Christmas words. This is also a good chance to practice letter recognition for toddlers and preschoolers.
