How to Make a Beautiful Butterfly Suncatcher

Make this beautiful butterfly suncatcher in honor of spring. It’s an easy and mess-free activity for preschoolers, kindergartners and older kids. Your child can choose any color tissue paper for their butterfly. This is a great activity to help little ones work on their fine motor skills, color recognition and scissors skills.

Supplies for Butterfly Suncatcher

Colorful tissue paper
Scissors
Black cardstock
Pencil
Clear contact paper
Chunky glitter (optional)
Butterfly template
Cricut (optional)
Double-sided tape

Directions

First, download and print the FREE butterfly template. Trace on black cardstock then cut. If you have a cutting machine, choose different butterfly images in your design space then cut. Set aside.
Next, cut the tissue paper into small pieces. If you’re not comfortable with your child using scissors, let them tear the tissue paper by hand.
Cut a piece of contact paper that is larger than the butterfly then peel off the backing. Carefully place your butterfly outline on top of the contact paper. Your child will need help with this step.
Cover the inside of the butterfly with the tissue paper pieces. Once finished, your child has the option to add chunky glitter.
Carefully peel off the back of another contact paper and place it on top of the butterfly, sticky side down. Smooth it out to get rid of any creases or bubbles. Your child may need help with this step.
Finally, cut out the butterfly suncatcher. Use double-sided tape to stick to a window or sliding glass door.
