The first day of school is always a big day for parents. Kids are experiencing new teachers, new classrooms or their first time away from home. I still can’t believe my big boy is a kindergarten student. Due to the pandemic, we decided to keep our son home for e-learning. I love the tradition of taking pictures on the first day, but it will be a little different this year. When he started VPK, we took photos of him getting out of the car and walking up to the building. I’m a little sad he won’t get to experience the excitement of going on campus especially for his first year. However, I still plan to have fun with the first day of school pictures.

With a Letter Board
Personalize a letter board with some funny or cute quotes for your child’s pictures. You can also stick with the basics like “first day of school” or “first day of distance learning” for the letter board. Need some ideas? Check out these quotes to use from One Mama’s Daily Drama. Your child can hold the letter board or have it next to them while they are either sitting or standing.

With a Back-to-School Pennant
Use an adorable back-to-school flag for pictures with your little student. Purchase a pennant from a local business or make your own. Check out this adorable DIY flag from Life with Vida blog. You can also check out these FREE Back to School prints and pennants from The Bear & The Fawn.

First Day of School Pictures with a Sibling
This is great idea for siblings who are both going back to school. However, if you only have one child entering school, this is a fun way to capture the relationship of the siblings. No need to have a perfect photo. A silly face or crazy pose will be fun to look back on when they are older.

Use a Balloon
I found this adorable DIY back to school balloon by Design Improvised. This is a fun prop for photos. No helium is needed for these balloons which is awesome.

Use a Chalkboard Sign
Take a trip to your local craft store, Walmart or Target and pick up a chalkboard sign. Having trouble finding them in stores? Order a chalkboard sign, like this one from Amazon, and fill it out using chalkboard markers. It’s nice to look back and see how much your child has change including what they want to be when they grow up.

Child’s At-home Workspace
My kindergartner is at home for distance learning this year. The best way to capture this moment is with a picture of him at his desk. My husband and I created a nice workspace for Caleb to enjoy virtual learning at home. Have your child sit down or stand where they will be completing their class assignments.
