It’s officially SPOOKY SEASON! I decided to decorate for Halloween this year but inside only (baby steps). I wanted to create something colorful and not too scary for my young children. When I spotted the wooden DIY haunted houses at Dollar Tree, I had to purchase a few. However, I wasn’t sure what to do with them until I saw this pretty haunted house glow up by Sierra Miller. I know pink is trending for Halloween right now but I had to go with something different. Check out my awesome Dollar Tree haunted house and make one for your home too!

Supplies for Dollar Tree Haunted House
- Wooden haunted house
- Acrylic paint ( skin tone colors: witch & any color: house)
- Foam brush
- Black glitter cardstock
- Toothpick
- Mini pom poms or yarn
- Hot glue with glue sticks
- Plastic spiders
- White cardstock
- Cricut Explore Air 2 (optional)
- Small pearls (I purchased Pearl Sequin Specialty Glitter by Recollections from Michaels)
- Mini broomstick
- Wooden doll head
- Split ring
- Peg Dolls (3″ for witch & 1.5″ for cat)
- Black felt
- Paint brush
- Spider web
Directions for Black Cat
- First, paint the 1.5″ peg doll black to create the cat. Allow it to dry.
- Next, cut small triangles from black felt for the ears and small arch for the tail. Glue to the peg doll.
- Finally, use a toothpick and paint to add eyes, nose and whiskers to the cat.
Directions for Cauldron
- First, use a glue gun to attach the split ring to the flat side of the doll head.
- Next, paint black and allow cauldron to dry.
- Finally, glue the small pearls on top of the cauldron to create bubbles.
Directions for Witch
- First, paint the head of the 3″ peg doll any skin tone. Paint the body the same color as the larger haunted house. Allow peg doll to dry.
- Next, use a toothpick and black paint to add eyes to the witch.
- Now glue black mini pom poms on the witch to create Afro puffs. I decided to add some glitter to the puffs but that’s optional. You can also use yarn to make the hair for your witch.
- To make the hat, take the remaining black felt and cut out a triangle shape. Form a cone then glue it together. Cut a small circle from the black felt the glue to the cone to form the witch hat. You can add a yarn to the hat or leave it plain.
- Finally, glue the hat on the head of the witch.
Directions for Dollar Tree Haunted House
- First, paint the haunted houses two different colors. Set aside to dry.
- Cut squares from black glitter cardstock and glue them behind the windows and doors of the haunted houses.
- Use your Cricut to make ghosts and skulls with crossbones to add to the windows. You can also use Halloween stickers if you don’t have a Cricut. I also added some star shaped glitter to some of the windows. The boo confetti was purchased from Target but you can add anything to the door.
- Now it’s time to attach the base of the small house to the larger one using the hot glue gun. See picture below.
- Glue the cauldron to the base of the smaller haunted house.
- Cut a moon shape from black glitter cardstock then glue it to the top of the larger haunted house.
- Glue a plastic spider onto each haunted house.
- Finally, add the stretchy spider web to complete the dollar tree haunted house. Place the witch and black cat in front of the first house and the broom against the larger house. See pictures below. Place this anywhere in your home for Halloween decor.
This was such a fun project to make for Halloween. I loved how it turned out! It’s currently sitting on my bookshelf with other spooky decor. This Dollar Tree haunted house was also featured on Great Day Live Tampa for a Halloween segment.
