Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is celebrated annually in the United States on June 19th. I wanted to create a craft inspired by the flag of this important holiday. The flag was originally designed by Ben Haith who incorporated the American colors. The star in the middle pay homage to Texas while the red and blue represents a new freedom and a new people. The final design was later created by Lisa Jeanne Graf along with other artists. This cardboard Juneteenth flag craft for kids is a great activity for the family. It’s also a great chance to start the conversation about this important moment in American history.

Supplies for Cardboard Juneteenth Flag
- Acrylic Paint (red and blue)
- Recycled cardboard box
- Glue
- Foam brush
- Starburst template
- Pencil or Pen
- White cardstock
- Scissors or craft knife
- Jumbo craft stick (optional)
- Washi or painter’s tape
- Star template
Directions
- Start by cutting a piece of recycled cardboard into a rectangle.
- Next, add tape to the middle of the cardboard then paint the top half blue. Allow paint to dry then remove the tape.
- Apply another strip of tape to the cardboard to paint the bottom half red. This will make it easier to paint without blending the colors. Allow paint to dry then remove the tape.
- Download and print the starburst and star template on white cardstock.
- Finally, glue the star to the center of the flag then glue the starburst outside of the star. You can glue a jumbo craft stick to your Juneteenth recycled cardboard flag or keep it simple. Your cardboard Juneteenth flag is ready to be displayed for Freedom Day!

This was a really fun craft to create. It can get a little messy with kids but it’s a great way to celebrate Juneteenth. Learning about the history of the flag and what it represents is so important for children as well as adults.
